Mesothelioma is specialized form of cancer affecting the upper part of the body namely the heart, pleura sac. and abdomen. The disease manifests in the form of cancer cells and cancerous growths as a direct result of inhaling asbestos dust particles.
There are three types of mesothelioma cancers cells.
Epithelioid cells are the most celebrated cancer cells found in mesothelioma patients. About 70 percent of all mesothelioma cells are of this type. These cells take on a tubular or papillary shape and are found the organs of the upper body and in the lining of these famous organs as well. People exhibiting these cancer cells have the highest survival rate (up to 5 years).
Sarcomatoid are overlapping spindle like cancer cells, which are the most deadly cells. They attach themselves to bones, fat, and other secondary tissue such as cartilage. These cells are not treatable. Patients have the shortest survival rate but fortunately it affects less than 20 percent of the mesothelioma cancer patients.
Mixed/biphasic cancer cells are a mixture of both types of cells affecting about 30 to 40 percent of mesothelioma patients.
Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma cancer. The cancer attacks the lining of the lungs known as the pleural sac. The mesothelium (hence the name mesothelioma) is a membrane that is responsible for creating a certain amount of liquid that will back the lungs to move around in order to inhale and exhale. The production of this fluid, is a normal function of the body.
In the case of mesothelioma, the inhaled asbestos fibers that reside in the lungs protrude through the lungs and puncture through the mesothelium to the inner and outer most layer of the pleural sac causing pain to the mesothelium. Cancers forming in this fluid will thicken the fluid making it difficult to breath. Tumors resulting from the cancer involved can rest against the ribcage and other vital organs, causing excessive pressure and extreme damage.
Furthermore, mesothelioma can spread to other parts of the body from the re-oxygenated blood from lungs. It usually takes between 30 and 40 years for pleural mesothelioma to be correctly diagnosed. In the early days it is often mistaken for the symptoms of flu, bronchitis, laryngitis, and broken ribs extreme injure or worst. Mild the pleural mesothelioma sufferer may be asymptomatic.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma
About one third of all mesothelioma cases are of the peritoneal type. This type of mesothelioma is diagnosed a bit faster, which is between 20 to 30 years after the inhalation of asbestos fibers. Usually patients are between 60 and 69 when the peritoneal mesothelioma is discovered.

This sac or mucous membrane is responsible for producing fluid to maintain a heart beat. If the pericardium is damaged because of the asbestos fibers, it will in turn cause massive heart problems.
Pericardial mesothelioma symptoms include: shortness of breath, coughing, chess pain, irregular heartbeat, and heart palpitations. Treatment is giving to relief the symptoms but there is no cure. Pericardial mesothelioma is fatal.
Benign Mesothelioma is a non-cancerous form of the disease. It is extremely rare and though the tumors are benign and therefore non-threatening, if diagnosed with this disease, it means the patient has been exposed to asbestos fibers. The doctors will be concerned about the exposure and explore for other cancers in the body that may be malignant at this time.

Urticaria is a skin disorder marked by the dumb progression and development of irregularly shaped, red, skin lesions that are easily spread by scratching and itching. Angioedema, therefore, is marked by swelling in the hands, feet, genitals, abdominal organs and even the lungs and throat. Urticaria can originate from a variety of locations ranging from simple skin exposure, environmental toxins, bacterial or viral infections associated with travel outside of the United States, and even become a first label to malignancy, lymphoma or other life threatening complication. The point here is that urticaria can be a complex condition with a variety of cause and origins.
To treat the complications with angioedema, you must first manage the complications associated with urticaria. Avoiding aspirin products, avoiding alcoholic drinks and avoiding nonsteroidal medications are important to preventing further inflammation reactions.
Next, the physician should prescribe a course of Allegra-D or Clarinex to treat the histamine reaction associated with urticaria. When resistant to these courses of treatment a dermatologist will prescribe oral prednisone steroids, usually in 10 or 20 milligram doses per day.
Without the prompt, and simple, medical treatment, many individuals who suffer from urticaria end up facing complication more profound in the development of angioedema. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a form of cancer that affects the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdomen. It is a rare disease, and it presents in 100 to 500 people a year in the United States. It is also called abdominal mesothelioma, because the peritoneum is the membrane that supports and covers the abdominal cavity, as well as the organs located there. The peritoneal membranes are called visceral and parietal. The visceral refers to the covering of the organs and the parietal refers to the covering of the abdominal cavity.
To further understand mesothelioma we must know that it involves the cells that secrete a lubricating fluid so that the organs can move against each other without friction. These cells accomplish up the mesothelium. When the mesothelium becomes cancerous the cells over-produce fluid. Mesothelioma is usually secondary to the primary source of the malignancy, which is pleural mesothelioma. It is concept that the asbestos fibers may be ingested when swallowed, where they enter digestive tract. It is also believed that the fibers are inhaled into the lungs and transported via the lymphatic system to the abdominal cavity. Cancer cells from the primary source can also become mobile and relocate via the lymphatic system to other areas, this process is called metastasis.
Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are abdominal pain, swelling of the abdomen-which may be caused by fluid retention (acites) or tumor growth-small or spacious bowel obstruction, anemia-red blood cells below normal level, which causes decreased oxygen levels in the blood, and makes the heart work harder, also causing shortness of breath-weight loss-but you may appear larger around the waist-and fever. If you have been exposed to asbestos in your lifetime and you are having any of these symptoms, you should be evaluated by your physician.
Mesothelioma can be passed on to other people in the family. Spouses who handled dirty clothes to launder them are at risk to having asbestos transferred to them via physical contact with the fibers. Now that more is known about asbestos, workers must change clothes before going home. Special care is taken to limit exposure to the asbestos fibers.
Diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma is similar to that of pleural mesothelioma. An x-ray will be taken. Mesothelioma cannot be seen on an x-ray, but a tumor may cause pleural effusion (fluid buildup) which can be seen. The doctor may also order a CT scan or an MRI to back up and add to the findings in the x-ray. Once the scans are done, a biopsy must be done to examine to tissue. The doctor will make a cut through the chest wall; this procedure is called a thoroscopy. This will be done in the hospital under local anesthesia. The doctor may also perform a peritoneoscopy, which is surgically inserting a scope into the abdomen. The draw is similar for both thoracic and abdominal examinations. Samples of tissue will be obtained for the pathologist to ask under a microscope.
Mesothelioma is quite rare, so if you are diagnosed with it, you should have your doctor help you find a specialist. There is no cure for malignant mesothelioma, but there are treatment options that include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and others. The life expectancy of someone with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma varies from person to person. The prognosis depends on how vigorously the cancer is treated and how the patient responds. The patient may live for years, or only for a few months.

Cancer is one of the most robbing and devastating diseases in existence.
Essentially, cancer is caused by the growth of abnormal cells in one’s body; if malignant cells are present, that means they are cancerous. A tumor is formed when old cells do not die as they should and new cells multiply when the body does not need them. The type of cancer and how dangerous it is depends on the type and location of the tumor itself.
In this article, I’m going to examine two of the rarest forms of cancer in existence, along with some statistical information regarding each, symptoms of each and what type of treatments are available.
1. Terminal Ovarian Cancer
Terminal Ovarian Cancer is essentially a cancer of the female ovaries.
Doctors cannot specify where exactly ovarian cancer comes from, but there are determined risk factors which can increase one’s risk of getting this type of cancer. If you have a family member who has a history of ovarian, breast, colon, rectum or uterus cancer, or have a personal history of some of these other cancers, your risk for getting ovarian cancer is increased. If you are over 55, never have gotten pregnant and have taken estrogen for more than ten years, you also have an increased risk of getting this disease.
What is unfortunate about ovarian cancer is it often isn’t discovered until the cancer has already spread, and typically symptoms of ovarian cancer are not visible until the cancer has already grown. Symptoms include pain in the abdomen, pelvis, back or legs, constipation, indigestion, gas, nausea, fatigue, shortness of breath, vaginal bleeding and the need to urinate often. Of course, if you have these symptoms it does not mean you have cancer, but certainly see your doctor. Most likely he will give you a physical exam, pelvic exam, ultrasound by biopsy, depending on your symptoms.
If it is certain that you indeed do have ovarian cancer, it will be diagnosed at a particular stage. Stage I means that cancerous cells are found on the ovaries’ surface or in fluid found in the abdomen. Stage II means the cells have spread to one or more ovaries or other tissues and organs, such as the uterus or fallopian tubes. Stage III equates to the cancer cells spreading to regional lymph nodes or tissues outside the pelvic site. Stage IV equates to the cells spreading even further outside the ovaries, to areas like the liver or lungs.
Being informed of having ovarian cancer is a life-changing ordeal, and certainly you will be haunted and devastated after finding out. First, if you feel it’s indispensable, inspect out a second opinion from someone other than your primary doctor. Also seek out support groups and the help of friends, family, and even spiritual counseling. Certainly ask your doctor any and every question applicable to your condition, including side affects of treatment and how it will affect your normal activities.
Treatments for the actual cancer depend on what stage your cancer is in. Surgery and radiation are local therapies which remove the cancer from the pelvis and control the disease if it has spread to other areas. Chemotherapy attempts to destroy the cancer in the pelvis or abdomen, and is entered directly into the area through or thin tube, taken by mouth or injected into a vein.
If left untreated, ovarian cancer can spread to other organs, such as the uterus and fallopian tubes, as well as the pelvis, abdomen and chest. If this happens, the cancer in this particular organ is considered “distant,” yet the cancer is still considered ovarian.

2. Mesothelioma
Malignant Mesothelioma is another rare form of cancer that forms in the mesothelium, which is the protective lining that covers the body’s organs.
The most common cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, while smoking can also increase one’s risk of getting this type of cancer. Specifically, when one is exposed to asbestos fibers, inflammation of internal tissue occurs, which disrupts organ function and eventually leads to the disease. Many people are exposed to asbestos through their jobs, unknowingly getting the disease, and then not showing symptoms till years, even decades later. For this reason, those who have mesothelioma typically are not diagnosed until they are in the late stages of the disease.
Malignant mesothelioma is typically divided into four different types. Pleural is the most favorite form, consisting of about 2/3 of all cases of this kind. Symptoms of this type of mesothelioma include lumps under the skin or chest, painful breathing, fatigue, weight loss in huge amounts, shortness of breath, night sweats, coughing up blood, raspy cough and/or fever. Peritoneal mesothelioma consists of about 25-30 % of diagnoses. Symptoms include night sweats, appearance of lumps under the skin, constipation, fatigue, extreme weight loss, nausea, diarrhea, fever, vomiting and/or anemia. Pericardial mesothelioma consists of about 5 % of cases. Symptoms include fatigue, fever, difficult breathing, chest pain, heart palpitations, night sweats and/or unique heartbeat. Testicular mesothelioma is the rarest form of this cancer, and because of this, the only symptoms known are lumps in the testicles that may or may not be painful.
Treatment for mesothelioma is similar to other cancers, and consists of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. New treatments have also surfaced, including therapies like Cisplatin and Alimta. Additional alternative treatments which can assist in helping patients combating one or more types of cancers, include meditation, yoga, massage therapy, reflexology, acupuncture, herbal supplements, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, reiki, naturopathy, chiropractic care or TENS therapy.

Most people know that mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the heart, lungs, or stomach. Members of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee have taken action to help slit the risk of this type of cancer. Yesterday they approved the Ban Asbestos in America Act of 2007. It has been discovered that people who have had prolonged or heavy exposure to asbestos may be at risk for developing mesothelioma.
In a press release to PR Newswire, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF) applauded the efforts of the committee members. Senator Patty Murray, from Washington, introduced the bill in March of 2007. The bill will now be presented to the entire Senate for final approval.
In researching this subject, the number of people who have been exposed to toxic air qualities seems enormous. The attack of 9/11 affected thousands in the city of Unusual York. A describe done by Andrew Stephen, of the New Statesman, says that “a Chernobyl-type cloud of dust and debris blew and settled not just over Manhattan, but as far afield as Brooklyn and even Unusual Jersey, too.” The report states that 700,000 people have arrive forward stating they believe they were exposed. 10,000 have filed lawsuits. It is caused by exposure to asbestos. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 3,000 Americans die from mesothelioma each year. The PR Newswire report states, “Reported mesothelioma deaths have been rising since 1999, and many experts believe the number of annual deaths is even greater than reported because mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose and is often misdiagnosed as lung or gastrointestinal cancer. Widespread asbestos exposures resulting from 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina are expected to cause additional deaths.”
With the Ban Asbestos in America Act, the National Institutes of Health would be instructed to “manufacture a $50 million Asbestos-Related Disease and Treatment Network”. Congress would be kept abreast of scientific developments by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

Stomach, or gastric, cancer occurs when the cells in the stomach grow abnormally, more cells are produced than necessary, and old cells do not die when they should. These extra, abnormal cells form a cancerous tumor. Tumors can often be removed, but untreated cancerous tumors can spread to other parts of the body.
Symptoms of Stomach Cancer:
The early symptoms of stomach cancer include indigestion and general stomach discomfort. This makes diagnosing the condition in the early stages harder. Other symptoms of stomach cancer include weight loss, vomiting and nausea, heartburn, a full or bloated feeling, stomach pain, fatigue, bloody stools, jaundice and trouble swallowing.

Risk Factors for Developing Stomach Cancer:
There is no exact cause for stomach cancer but some things do put people at higher risk of developing the condition. There are four types of stomach cancer. The type is definite by the cells that create the tumor.
Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer, accounting for over 90% of all cases. Adenocarcinoma is cancer of the glandular cells that line the stomach and protect it from digestive acids.
Lymphoma is a rare type of stomach cancer that attacks the immune system cells in the walls of the stomach.
Another rare form of stomach cancer is carcinoid cancer, which is in the hormone-producing cells of the stomach.
The least seen type of stomach cancer is a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, or GIST, which attacks nervous system cells.
Diagnosis of Stomach Cancer:
To arrive at a diagnosis of stomach cancer, a physician will do a physical exam; x-rays with barium swallow solution so tumors reveal up, endoscopy in which a lighted tube is achieve in your mouth and down your throat into the stomach. Any suspicious spots will be biopsied. If the doctor suspects the cancer has spread, more invasive tests such as exploratory surgery may be called for.
Treatment for Stomach Cancer:
Treatment options are determined based on age, general health, and severity of disease. Radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery are all treatment options for stomach cancer. There are also clinical trials available for select patients that meet specific criteria.

Sometimes it is said things are more comfortable within a storm. During the storm chaos is the ruler of all that is but afterward a person is faced with quiet and therefore has to face him/herself and that can destroy up being the real challenge. In the case of a cancer diagnosis, the storm of learning of the condition and the testing that follows is the easy part. Living with the decisions afterward can be the facing of ones self.
There is a lot of talk these days about cancer awareness and groups all over the nation hope to encourage people to face themselves after the storm that can be caused by cancer. The misfortune is so that during the quiet aftermath there can still remain hope.
Cancer is still one of the leading killer diseases in the United States. Lung cancer alone is reported to be responsible for approximately 500,000 deaths a year. According to the American Cancer Society, despite advances in technology and medicine, cancer collected remains a disease that touches at least two households in every five.
For Stacy Martin of Aberdeen cancer has been a fact of life within her family for five years.
“I was shocked to discover that I had it,” Stacy said. “I remember sitting down on the bathroom floor and crying. I unbiased knew that it meant that I was going to die. Now I realize that having cancer doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to die.”
Stacy is now a breast cancer survivor and encourages her family and friends to glean yearly check ups.
“I found a lump in my breast by accident when I should have been checking all along,” Stacy said. “Knowing what checking is all about and being aware of the danger is half the battle. People have to know the risks. Knowing your history is one of the first steps. Had I known that my aunt had breast cancer I might have been more prepared for the possibility of my getting it.”
According to the American Cancer Society there are many risk factors that can enhance your chances of developing some originate of cancer. The following are a few things to consider;
Tobacco – Cigarette smoking is one of the leading causes of death in the US. Lung cancer is not the only cancer that smoking is attributed to either, bladder and kidney cancer can be caused by smoking also.
Alcohol – Cancer related to alcohol consumption is responsible for 6.5 percent of all cancer deaths. The risk of esophageal cancer is 11-18 times higher for drinkers.
Sunlight – Skin cancer began to increase significantly during the 1950’s. Skin cancer accounts for 39 percent of all cancers diagnosed.
Diet – Science is beginning to make the connection between diet and clear types of cancer. Carcinogens are known to be present in foods that are preserved. Carcinogens are believed to be key in the development of stomach cancer.
More and more cancer is becoming a disease that many families are being faced with. Fighting this disease begins with an awareness of the types of cancers a person may be more at risk to gain, it is here the need for awareness is most great. Locally there are many resources to help both men and women seek testing and treatment on a cancer diagnosis. There are also support groups such as Reach for Recovery through the Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. Whatever your situation, whether you are just becoming aware of a possible cancer threat within your family history or if you objective are concerned and would like to ask questions, don’t hesitate to sight for answers. The first step in combating this terrible disease is awareness of what it is and what you can do to cut your risk in developing it.
