If one has been exposed to asbestos for a while, is the chance of them getting mesothelioma inevitable?? If so, is there any chance one could survive it?

Exposure does not mean cancer. If that were true, the rules would be much more strict than we have now. There are many factors and who gets sick is just not understood. There are several cancers that you can get from asbestos , meso being one. However it is the worst, since it is a death sentence. The longest survival I have heard of is six years.

Mesothelioma cancer can strike anyone, but appears more often in men than in women. It is a disease mainly linked to asbestos and smoke, since most people who have worked on jobs where they breathed in asbestos particles, have developed this pathology.
Experts believe that smoking does not seem to be a directly related risk for developing the disease only by its own, but its combination with asbestos exposure increases the risk of Mesothelioma, so stop smoking if you are exposed to asbestos in your workplace.
According to statistics eight out of ten of all reported cases were exposed to asbestos, however there are cases of people that have not had any exposure to the fibers of this mineral.
Therefore, the main risk factor for developing Mesothelioma can be found in asbestos, a group of fibrous metamorphic minerals which have an special resistance to fire. Asbestos have been exploited for a variety of purposes, such as industrial products, roof shingles and flooring products.
However, some uses of asbestos are banned in many countries, since it is known that the inhalation of some kinds of asbestos fibers can cause various illnesses, including Mesothelioma, lung, larynx and kidney cancer and asbestosis, a chronic lung ailment, but a non cancerous pathology.
Most asbestos fibers are invisible to the unaided human eye and the problem increases because just one asbestos fiber can become the source of hundreds of thinner and smaller fibers over time. As they get smaller and lighter, they become more mobile and more easily to be driven and carried by the air.
That is why people who work in asbestos mines and mills or producing asbestos products must wear personal protective equipment to lower their risk of exposure, according to acceptable levels of asbestos exposure in the workplace set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the United States.
In order to reduce your chance of getting ill with some of the asbestos-related diseases if you are a asbestos worker, is not only to wear the proper clothes and equipment, but also take a shower and change your clothing before leaving the workplace to diminish the possibility of dust brought home on your clothing or hair.

I have recently found that my family was exposed to vermiculite, a material containing asbestos, in my childhood home. During my childhood my father remodeled our home several times. What is our risk of developing asbestos related diseases? (I am having trouble finding true cancer rates and information in google searches.)
No one in my family is showing abnormalities 10+ years after moving out.

Risk is generally low. Vermiculite itself is not toxic, but can be contaminated with asbestos. Apparently, when and where the vermiculite comes from determines the risk. Please make sure you don’t smoke. There is really little you can do at this point other than not smoking. If you have any symptoms a chest xray would be a good first step.

My father-in-law was recently diagnosed with mesothelioma. He is a disabled vet on a limited income. The life expectancy is only 4-18 months. He and my mother-in-law have filed a lawsuit against the asbestos manufacturer. The concern is that they have very little money and without compensation we are afraid that my mother-in-law will lose their house when he passes. Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks for answering. The lawyer says that because he has the disease that we have a good case. Mesothelioma is caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure.
We have filed the suit against the manufacturer because we believe that he was exposed while working in the boiler room while in the army and suing the army just isn’t an option.
The lawyer we have retained has been involved with thousands of these cases. He has given us examples of awards won by his law firm, but I want to know what the chances are of not winning.

Lawsuits like that take years to even get to court. The companies have big time lawyers, much more than the average person can afford. I see commercials on tv all the time about a class action lawsuit against the manufacturer, so that hasn’t even come to fruition yet. Like I said, years.
